Kate Barclay
What does your role at BIA involve?
As an experienced Biochemical Engineer, Kate leads skills and talent programme development across STEM industries using over 30 years of experience within large pharma and small company networks. Working with BIA, she represents the sector ensuring access to the incredible talent and addressing skills gaps to start, grow and scale innovative life sciences and biotech organisations.
Previous experience & achievements
In addition to her role at BIA, Kate works as an independent consultant supporting organisations to develop their skills and talent strategies. She has oversight for quality governance of technical and professional education as IfATE Non-Executive Director and is a Board member of North Hertfordshire College. Kate holds MBA from Open University and a PhD in Bio-Chemical Engineering from UCL. As a Chartered Engineer (CEng FIChemE), she held previous senior leadership roles across diverse pharmaceutical manufacturing and R&D portfolios including Solid Dose, Parenteral & Inhaled Devices.
If you could invite any scientist or entrepreneur to dinner, who would it be and why?
Rosalind Franklin, as she made contributions to the understanding of the fine molecular structures of DNA and RNA. She studied science at a time when few women attended university and led pioneering work on multiple viruses. Kate would love to know what she thinks about what we know now!
Ben Folwell
Ben Folwell is a Principal in the Citeline | Evaluate Consulting and Analytics team. Ben leads the BD&L practice area and has over 10 years of life sciences consulting experience, with a specialization in quantitative analysis. Ben has led projects assessing probability of technical success, pipeline tracking, competitor analysis and product forecasting across a broad range of indications and markets, with an increasing focus on rare diseases. Recent work has included building prioritization models that can be used to identify licensing opportunities, attractive indications, or technologies. Ben holds a BSc in Microbiology from the University of Leeds and a PhD in Molecular Microbiology and Analytical Chemistry from the University of Essex.
Ian McCubbin CBE
Chair of RoslinCT and Chair of Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult; Chair of Manufacturing Advisory Group for IUK Industrial Challenge Fund; Member of the UK Government Vaccines Task Force. Ian retired from his role as SVP North America, Japan & Global Pharma Supply, GSK in April 2017. He joined GSK in 2006, his second spell with the company and was responsible for 17 factories and 7,000 employees globally whose role within GSK was to supply the New Product pipeline and the majority of GSK's pharmaceutical sales. Ian chaired the Advanced Therapy Manufacturing Task Force originally co-chaired with George Freeman, Minister for Life Sciences and the group published its Action Plan to 'anchor' commercial scale manufacturing in the UK. The Action Plan has subsequently been adopted in full as part of the Life Sciences Industrial Strategy. He led the manufacturing work stream of the UK Vaccines Task Force between March 2020 and May 2021. Ian is a pharmacist with 40 years of experience in the Pharmaceutical industry working for GSK, Merck Generics and IVAX. His core capability is in the field of manufacturing and supply chain leadership and new product introduction. His passion is cell and gene therapies due to their transformational medical benefits and the opportunity they create for UK economic benefit.
Rebecca Pope (she/her)
Dr Rebecca Pope is a clinical neuroscientist & Roche UK's Digital & Data Science Innovation Lead. Rebecca's focus is working with the NHS, governments, regulators, clinicians and patients on how we can bring the advanced technologies that we’re used to using in our everyday lives, like artificial intelligence, into healthcare. She is also an honorary Senior Research Fellow and PhD supervisor in AI at UCL, TEDx speaker and has been voted as one of 'The Most Influential Women in UK Tech'. Rebecca is deeply passionate about equality, diversity & inclusion in STEM & society and is part of several initiatives & networks that encourage an inclusive environment where everyone feels empowered.
Stephen Stewart
Steve joined CGTC is May 2021 to head up the ATAC apprenticeship programme and the ATSTN skills programmes. These skills programmes have recently been recognised in the Princess Royal Trust Awards for excellence in training. Steve previously worked at GSK where he spent 10 years in their HR and Talent teams establishing several global programmes with a focus on DE&I and leading HR at a manufacturing Site. He has over 20 years’ experience in Human Resources. Steve recently completed his Level 7 Senior Leader MBA Apprenticeship with MMU and is a Fellow of the CIPD and a member of the Apprentice Diversity Champions Network.
Louise Taylor
Louise joined CPI in 2014 and has over 9 years of experience in downstream process development and scale up, working on a variety of biotherapeutics including RNA, proteins and viral vectors as well as the creation of an automated continuous purification platform. In the Covid-19 pandemic Lousie worked on the development and scale up of an saRNA vaccine candidate whilst supporting the build of CPI’s RNA Centre of Excellence. Louise now leads CPI’s RNA Training Academy, supporting the development of a catalogue of training courses to upskill industry in RNA therapeutics and vaccines. Most recently she has organised the first RNA vaccines and therapeutics conference in London bringing together a range of academic and industry partners to facilitate cross collaboration and knowledge sharing.
